The Mission San Gabriel established Rancho Cucamonga as a site for grazing cattle back in the 1800s when it was still under Mexican control. By 1850, when California was recognized as a state, people realized that grapes could thrive in this area, and vineyards began popping up. With this came an increase in wealth in the area.
